Assignment Skybolt (Dark Force BD $29.95) 1968 US/Greek Bond ripoff starring Nicholas Kirk (undubbed name: Nikos Kourkoulos).

Bettie Page Double Feature - Kino Cult #7 (Kino BD $29.95) Low-brow color burlesque classics, including Varietease (1954) and Teaserama (1955), plus bonus shorts and extras. Restored from the original 16mm materials.

The Cat and the Canary (Eureka US BD $39.95) Paul Leni’s 1927 comedy-horror classic, adapted from a stage show, may not be the original “family gathered together with a murderer in an old dark house” thriller, but it’s probably the most influential.

The Demoniacs (Indicator US 4K UHD $49.99, BD $39.99) A 1974 “French erotic thriller,” it says here. Should’ve called it Ooh La La of DEATH! then. Do I have to think of everything?

Directed by… John Farrow (Imprint BD AUD$209.95) Five films, four of which are making their world debut on Blu-ray. Titles include Commandos Strike at Dawn (1942) with Paul Muni and Anna Lee, The Hitler Gang (1944) with Bobby Watson, the guy who specialized in playing der Fuehrer; Night has a Thousand Eyes (1948) with Edward G. Robinson and Gail Russell, Submarine Command (1951) with William Holden, and Botany Bay (1953) with Alan Ladd, plus a 2021 documentary on Mr. Farrow and a wealth of other bonus material.

Film Focus: Kim Novak (Imprint BD AUD$99.95) A pair of films from 1957, Pal Joey with Frank Sinatra and the biopic Jeanne Eagels with Jeff Chandler, and from 1959 Middle of the Night with Fredric March.

I Am Cuba (Criterion 4K UHD $49.95, BD $39.95) 1964 joint Soviet/Cuban avant garde film about life on the island; a collection of short films narrated, apparently, by Cuba herself. Directed by Mikhail Kalatozov.

Kind Hearts and Coronets (Studiocanal UK 4K UHD £22.99) The illegitimate heir to a title decides to murder his way to the top of the line in this marvelous black comedy starring Alec Guiness in eight roles; directed by Robert Hamer, 1949. Also available today, another Guiness comedy classic, same format and price, The Lavender Hill Mob (1951).

The Nude Vampire (Indicator US 4K UHD $49.99, BD $39.99) Sometimes, you need nothing more than a three-word title to give you the movie’s pitch, ambiance, and plot, am I right? Directed by Jean Rollin, 1970.

The Road to Ruin - Forbidden Fruit: The Golden Age of the Exploitation Picture Vol. 15 (Kino BD $29.95) Helen Foster stars in both the 1928 silent original and the 1934 talkie remake about a young woman who makes bad, bad choices in life.

The Scarface Mob (Arrow Video US BD $39.95) Theatrical version of the original pilot film for The Untouchables television series, starring Robert Stack as Eliot Ness and Neville Brand as Al Capone. Directed by Phil Karlson, 1959.

Tales of Adventure Collection 3 (Imprint BD AUD$139.95) After wonderful sets devoted to desert action and jungle thrills, we’re up to war and survival films with Ten Tall Men (1951) starring Burt Lancaster and Jody Lawrance;  Anthony Mann’s The Heroes of Telemark (1965) with Richard Harris and Kirk Douglas; Sands of the Kalahari (1965) with Stuart Whitman and Stanley Baker, and Lost Command (1966) with Anthony Quinn and Alain Delon.

Tormented (Film Masters BD $24.95) Richard Carlson is about to be married, if he can shake the ghost of his dead ex-girlfriend in Bert I. Gordon’s 1960 supernatural classic, although you know how we like to toss the word “classic” around. Still, the Film Masters restorations have been impeccable and we look forward to each one.

The Green Cockatoo (RB UK Screenbound Pictures BD £12.99) 1937 drama about a young woman who comes to The Big City looking for work but finding Big Troubles. John Mills, Réne Ray, and Robert Newton star; nice pedigree, as the film’s based on a story by Graham Greene and directed by William Cameron Menzies.

High Noon (Kino 4K UHD $39.95, BD $24.99) Western classic with Sheriff Will Kane discovering he lacks allies when a group of baddies come to town. 1952 film that’s not without controversy but we love it anyway. You probably know this already, but it was produced by Stanley Kramer, directed by Fred Zimmerman, and stars Gary Cooper, Grace Kelly, and Thomas Mitchell.

Two Films by Yasujirō Ozu (RB UK BFI BD £19.99) Includes I Was Born, But… (1932)  and There Was a Father (1942) and if you are not familiar with Ozu films, you should be.

Accidentally Preserved Vol. 5 (Undercrank BD $29.98) A collection of all-but-lost silent films, highlighted by Lorraine of the Lions (1925), a Daughter of the Jungle type thriller, and Rex the Wonder Horse starring in Hoofbeats of Vengeance (1928) and what are we all waiting for? This fifth volume of AP is the first in Blu-ray, in case you are wondering, you Nosy Parkers, you.

King Kong (Steelbook) (Paramount 4K UHD $34.99) And no, this is not the King Kong we all love, it is the 1976 remake that made us all want to get baseball bats and go looking for producer Dino De Laurentiis and director John Guillermin.

The Looters (Kino BD $24.95) Air crash survivors in the Rockies attempt to hike to safety, little knowing there’s a killer in their midst in this 1955 thriller with Rory Calhoun, Ray Danton, and Julie Adams.

Picnic at Hanging Rock (Criterion 4K UHD $49.95) Moody 1975 Australian supernatural mystery about a group of female students who disappear on a school outing. Directed by Peter Weir.

You Never Can Tell (Kino BD $24.95) A murdered dog returns to earth to put the collar (so to speak) on his killer, a human fortune-hunter after the dog’s inheritance, and once again I remind you, here at In The Balcony, we don’t write these things, we just report them. Dick Powell and Peggy Dow star in this 1951 film that really should’ve been called Here Comes Mr. Yorkie.

Animation Night In Canada, Vol. 1 (Canadian International Pictures BD $36.98) More than a dozen mind-blowing films; some of the funniest, wisest, sassiest, most artistic cartoons ever made. Available from Vinegar Syndrome. Our consensus Official ITB Co-Release of the Month for April.

Bluebeard (Kino BD $24.95) Edward G. Ulmer’s 1944 noir classic about the infamous wife killer; John Carradine and Jean Parker star. A PRC release, so not to be judged to the same standard as other films.

Dr. Terror's House of Horrors (Vinegar Syndrome 4K UHD $44.98) 1965 horror anthology classic directed by Freddie Francis and starring Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee, but not a Hammer film, sorry.

Hot Spur (Severin Films BD $29.95) A young man seeks revenge for his sister’s murder in this 1968 film with James Arena and Virginia Gordon.

Meet John Doe (ClassicFlix BD $29.95, DVD $24.95) 1941 Frank Capra film with Gary Cooper and Barbara Stanwyck; it’s long been in the public domain and long needed restoration so let’s hope this is it.

Misunderstood (Radiance US BD $39.95) Anthony Quayle stars in this 1966 Italian drama about a dysfunctional family, directed by Luigi Comencini.

The Scavengers (Severin Films BD $29.95) Ex-Confederates vs. former slaves in a 1969 drive-in low-budget actioner directed by Lee Frost.

Secret Beyond the Door (Kino BD $24.95) Joan Bennett thinks husband Michael Redgrave is trying to kill her. Suspicion this ain’t. Directed by Fritz Lang, 1947.

The Shape of Night (Radiance US BD $39.95) 1964 Japanese film about a nice girl by day whose night job leads to some bad decisions. Directed by Noboru Nakamura.

Submarine Command (Kino BD $24.95) Say, didn’t we just mention this? Drama, suspense, and tension aboard the Tiger Shark in WW2. Bill Holden, Darryl Hickman, Nancy Olson, Don Taylor, and Bill Bendix star. How many times this month are YOU thinking of buying this, hmmm? Directed by John Farrow, it says up there.

Thunder in the East (Kino BD $24.95) Alan Ladd is a gunrunner in post-colonial India in Charles Vidor’s 1952 thriller; also starring Deborah Kerr and Charles Boyer.

The Tin Star (Arrow US BD $39.95) Lean, mean Anthony Mann VistaVision western; Henry Fonda is an aging bounty hunter, Anthony Perkins is a young sheriff.

Vitagraph Comedies (Kino BD $39.95) In many ways, we film lovers are living in a golden age. This set contains dozens of one, one-half, two, and three reel comedies from the oughts through the early twenties, starring John Bunny, Larry Semon, Mr. & Mrs. Sidney Drew, and many, many others. More than nine total hours of fun; our consensus Official ITB Co-Release of the Month for April.
